Apple is changing gears in its tech development strategy, putting plans for a more affordable version of its Vision Pro headset on hold as it dives deeper into the competitive world of AI-powered smart glasses. According to a recent Bloomberg report by Mark Gurman, the tech giant is now channeling more resources and personnel into building smart glasses that can rival Meta’s latest wearable tech.
Originally, Apple had been working on a lighter, less expensive version of its Vision Pro mixed reality headset. But insiders say that the project has now taken a back seat as Apple turns its attention to creating next-generation smart glasses with artificial intelligence capabilities. These glasses are seen as a more practical and wearable product that fits into users’ everyday lives.
Apple is reportedly developing two different versions of smart glasses. The first, codenamed N50, will function in tandem with an iPhone and won’t include a built-in display. These are expected to be revealed as early as 2026, with a potential release date in 2027.
The second version will be more advanced and include a display, putting it in direct competition with Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, which launched their second generation recently. Apple initially planned to release these more advanced smart glasses in 2028, but is now accelerating development to get them out sooner.
While Apple’s shift signals a new direction in its wearable tech strategy, it’s still playing catch-up with Meta, which has been in the smart glasses game since 2021. Nonetheless, with Apple’s design expertise, integration with iOS, and growing push into AI, its upcoming smart glasses could be the next major leap in personal tech — aiming to be both stylish and smart, not just futuristic headgear.
