Walmart is gearing up to launch a major training initiative in 2025 — and this time, it’s all about AI. The retail giant is partnering with OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, to help its massive workforce of over 2 million employees around the world get comfortable with the fast-growing role of artificial intelligence in the workplace.
This new program is part of Walmart’s broader “Skills-First Workforce Initiative,” which focuses on hiring and developing people based on what they can do — not just on whether they have a college degree. With AI becoming a major part of industries everywhere, Walmart wants to ensure its team — from warehouse workers and shelf stockers to office employees — can keep up with the tools of the future.
Walmart CEO Doug McMillon explained that this move isn’t about replacing people with robots — it’s about enhancing jobs. “Every role will change in some way,” he said, adding that AI tools should make work more efficient, more manageable, and even more rewarding.
So what will this look like for everyday workers? While office employees may start using AI tools sooner, frontline staff like those handling online orders or working in logistics will likely see slower, more thoughtful integration. AI might help them manage tasks or boost productivity, but the human element — especially when it comes to customer service — isn’t going anywhere.
McMillon emphasized that Walmart will be open about how and why it’s introducing AI, so employees aren’t left in the dark. The goal is to support workers through the transition, not leave them behind.
This shift comes at a time when the U.S. labor market is facing big changes — from worker shortages to an aging population. Walmart’s skills-focused approach is not just about staying ahead in retail, but also about setting a new standard for how companies can help employees grow alongside technology.
The AI training program will start with office staff in 2025 and then gradually expand to include store and warehouse workers. Walmart hopes this phased approach will give employees the time and tools they need to thrive in an AI-driven world.
