When it comes to the global chip race, Nvidia is proving it’s not ready to wave the white flag on China just yet. According to a Reuters report, the world’s most valuable chipmaker is cooking up a new AI chip specifically designed for the Chinese market — one that’s not as powerful as its flagship but still packs a punch.
The chip, nicknamed B30A, is essentially a “middle child” in Nvidia’s lineup. It won’t be as mighty as the B300 Blackwell GPU, which is the company’s crown jewel, but it will be a step up from the H20 chips that U.S. regulations currently allow them to sell in China. Think of it like this: the H20 is your trusty mid-range phone, the B300 is the latest top-of-the-line smartphone, and the B30A? Well, that’s the carefully balanced upgrade meant to keep customers satisfied while staying on the right side of trade restrictions.
What makes it interesting is the chip’s structure. Unlike the dual-die design of the B300, the B30A is single-die — a simpler build, but still loaded with attractive features such as high-bandwidth memory, NVLink support, and ultra-fast data transmission. In other words, not the full buffet, but still a very filling meal.
Nvidia, in its official statement, played it safe: “We evaluate products for our roadmap and ensure everything we sell has full approval from the right authorities.” In plain English — “Yes, we’re making chips, but only if the government says it’s cool.”
The timing is noteworthy too. The Trump administration has recently softened its stance on exporting advanced AI chips to China, but approval for this specific chip is still uncertain. Critics argue America risks losing its AI lead if too much tech flows to Beijing. Nvidia, however, sees it differently. To them, abandoning China’s massive market is like selling shovels during a gold rush… and then refusing to enter the biggest mining camp.
For now, Nvidia’s B30A is shaping up to be a clever compromise — powerful enough to keep China interested, but dialed back enough to keep regulators from slamming the brakes.
