Google has taken another major leap in its AI push — and this time, it’s deeply woven into the tools you already use every day.
Starting July 2, the tech giant officially rolled out Gemini AI-powered assistants — known as “Gems” — across Google Workspace apps, including Docs, Gmail, Sheets, Slides, and Drive. That means the same AI muscle you’ve seen in Gemini’s standalone app is now built into the workflow of your favorite productivity tools.
No more tab switching. No more repeated prompts. These assistants are designed to sit right alongside your work, offering tailored support when and where you need it most.
What’s a Gem, exactly?
Think of it as a custom-made AI sidekick. You can train it to understand your tone, memorize your preferences, or even reference specific company documents — all so it can respond in a way that feels personal, not generic.
For example, if you’re a content marketer, you can create a Gem that knows your brand’s voice and helps punch up blog intros. A salesperson might build a Gem to summarize CRM notes into polished follow-up emails. Even technical teams can set up Gems that follow internal documentation rules, speeding up code reviews or product copy drafts.
These aren’t one-size-fits-all assistants. Google lets you customize Gems with names, instructions, and files — so once they’re set up, they become “smart shortcuts” embedded in your workspace.
Even cooler? These AI helpers can now use Workspace features — like referencing recent files, tagging team members, or pulling insights from your Drive — all directly within the side panel. That makes them feel more like part of the furniture and less like an outside tool bolted on.
There’s a catch, though: you still need to visit the Gemini site to create or update a Gem. So while they work seamlessly within apps like Gmail or Sheets, editing them isn’t yet built into the in-app experience.
The rollout is currently hitting paid Workspace users with Gemini access and will continue over the next two weeks. So if you haven’t seen it yet, it’s on the way.
In short: Google isn’t just integrating AI — it’s rebuilding productivity around it. And with Gems now living inside the tools you already use, your workflow might be about to get a whole lot smarter.
