The Claude chatbot is getting its own “Voice Mode,” currently rolling out in beta to users of the Claude mobile app. Over the next few weeks, English-speaking users will start seeing this option show up, allowing them to ditch the keyboard and actually have full-on spoken conversations with Claude. Yes, like chatting with a friend—except this one runs on Claude Sonnet 4, Anthropic’s flagship AI model.
So, what’s the vibe? According to Anthropic’s support docs, Voice Mode is perfect for those moments when your hands are tied but your brain is buzzing. Maybe you’re cooking, walking, or juggling a dozen things—but still want to dive into an idea or ask about a doc. You speak, Claude listens and responds out loud, and it even highlights key points on your screen while chatting. Very “AI assistant of the future” energy.
And this isn’t just a one-note voice either—you’ll get to pick from five distinct voice options, making the experience a bit more personal. You can also switch between text and voice whenever you want, and every convo comes with a neat transcript and summary at the end. Handy? Extremely.
But of course, there are limits. For free users, voice chats count toward your regular conversation cap (20–30 convos per week is the average). And if you’re hoping for deeper integrations—like having Claude check your Google Calendar or scan your Gmail—you’ll need a paid plan. Enterprise users even get Google Docs access.
This isn’t a total surprise. Anthropic’s Chief Product Officer Mike Krieger had teased voice features earlier this year, and rumors swirled about collaborations with Amazon and ElevenLabs. Whether those collabs came to life is still hush-hush.
Still, Voice Mode is Anthropic’s next step in making Claude feel less like a chatbot—and more like a coworker, assistant, or, let’s be honest, your new AI BFF.
