In a recent update, Meta confirmed that it will start using public content shared by adult users in the EU—think public posts, comments, and interactions—to train its generative AI models. This comes right on the heels of rolling out Meta AI features across the region.
Their goal? To build smarter, more culturally aware AI tools for Europeans. From capturing local slang and dialects to understanding humor and sarcasm unique to each country, Meta says this is about designing AI that doesn’t just work for the EU—but is built for it.
But here’s the fine print.
Private messages are off-limits. So is any data from users under 18. However, the public posts you’ve made—possibly years ago—are now fair game for AI training, unless you explicitly opt out.
Yes, you can object. Notifications are rolling out via apps and email with an “easy-to-find” objection form. But that raises a familiar concern: will people notice it? Understand it? Take action in time?
Meta frames this approach as transparent and necessary, comparing it to what companies like Google and OpenAI are already doing. But critics say the line between “public” and “private” is blurry—and consent should be active, not passive.
